The Archives contain a rich collection of written and pictorial material, as well as memorabilia and artifacts, held in trust for the Archdiocese of Hobart. The wide-ranging collection spans a century and a half of life in the Catholic Church community in Tasmania.
The present-day role of the Archivist is to continue collecting and preserving historical material from all parts of the diocese so that the ongoing story of faith and courage will be recorded and available to future generations.
Every effort is made to assist researchers. However, as the Archives Office is open only on a part-time basis, it is recommended that an appointment be made in advance with Archives staff.
Genealogical researchers are advised to send their enquiries by mail or email. Original baptism and marriage registers are not available to researchers but details can be provided from a computer database. The current fee for each search is $25. (Monies received help towards conservation work on fragile registers.)

THE WALLIS CENTRE
The Archives is housed on the ground floor of The Wallis Centre, Elizabeth Street, North Hobart.
The heritage museum is currently in storage awaiting renovation work on the first floor of the building. Funding is needed in order to complete this work which is vital for the appropriate care and preservation of memorabilia associated with the history of the Archdiocese. Due notice will be given when it is possible to welcome interested visitors.
