Leading young people in their search for answers

Cassia Sampaio says her new role as Director of the Office of Youth Evangelisation offers an exciting opportunity to assist young people in their search for truth and happiness.

“I really have in my heart a passion for the youth,” Cassia said.

“I feel very fulfilled when I am close to them and able to be there for them.”

The youngest of three children, Cassia grew up in the state of São Paulo in southeast Brazil and became a consecrated lay person within the Palavra Viva Catholic Community in 2013.

She says her community’s charism of announcing Jesus to the world is a motivating factor in her desire to lead young people towards a personal relationship with Christ.

“Young people, I see more and more … are searching for truth, searching for freedom, but they don't know where to find that,” Cassia said.

She says she wants young Catholics to find “the same happiness” she found through her own faith journey and to know that “it's possible that there is an answer for what they're searching for”.

Cassia, together with five other members of Palavra Viva Catholic Community, first came to Tasmania in December 2017.

Having been in Tasmania for three years, Cassia has developed strong networks with young people in Tasmania through her community’s involvement with retreats, school visits, mission evenings and various youth activities.

“I feel very welcome here - I like the people, the nature. I love the English language, the quality of life,” Cassia said.

A major part of implementing Archbishop Julian’s pastoral plan for youth ministry in Tasmania will be to focus on the development of parish youth groups.

“I really want the youth to discover or to experience this sense of family in the parish community,” Cassia said.

“I believe when the youth see others from the same age [group] as them living their faith, they feel more encouraged to ‘go on’ and [not] give up”.

Cassia replaces Tomasz Juszczak, who recently accepted the position of Director of the Office Evangelisation for the Diocese of Broken Bay.
