Let the light of Christ shine through you

By Cassia Sampaio, Director of the Office of Youth Evangelisation

Have you ever experienced looking at someone and noticing that there is something different about them? You can’t define exactly what it is but that there is something different, something special. Their smile is sincere, their eyes bring hope, their appearance brings serenity and you get infected by their presence.

This was my experience nine years ago when I met a girl though mutual friends. She was different from the others. The way she talked about life, the joy in living, her gestures, and the way she related with others; it was different. It bothered me a lot and many times I thought: “I want to be like her, I want to experience the same thing she has. I don’t know what it is but I want to have the same joy of living.”

As I got to know her, I found out that the source of this genuine joy in her life was from a deep relationship with Jesus. Her intimacy with Jesus was so deep that she didn’t need to talk about Him; just the way she lived ignited in me the desire to truly find Him. Some months later, during a moment in Eucharistic adoration, I finally had my first personal experience with Jesus – an experience that completely changed my life. I had found the ‘source’ I was searching for – the one who quenches the thirst of my heart every day and who loves me in a way that no one else does.

Sometimes I meet young people who have already encountered Jesus, have experienced His presence and love, but they are afraid and ashamed to be like the girl I met: a “light to the world” (Mt 5, 14). Just as I encountered Jesus through another young person, other young people can encounter and know Him through you. Jesus invites you, young men and women, to be a channel of His grace and His light upon all those around you; at your school, work, family, university and parish.

Don’t be afraid to give witness to your experience of Jesus and your faith. Sometimes you will need words and sometimes you won’t. There are a lot of young people waiting for the light that is within you. Be courageous. You are not alone!
